ATN Research Projects

As an end of year activity ATN was asked to chose a topic related to camp.  We went to curious cove!

Creating questions to answer, they had to research their information on the internet.  BUT it had to be written in their own words.  It could not be copied and pasted.  This is called Paraphrasing.  Here are my picks for top 5 research projects.  Tell me what was your favourite slide and something you learnt?

Manufacturing Media - adverts

 In Manaiakalani, our class has been looking at the power of media.  How they have two messages.  To get us to DO something, or to get us to BUY something.  Here are a few of our awesome adverts created in the last two weeks.  Do they make you want to do it/ buy it?

What Good Writers Do!

 At the end of last term, ATN had to put together a teaching slide about all the things they had learnt in writing.  It had to give an example and use a range of media to present their learnings.  They have blown me away with what they learnt.  I wish I could post all 24  but I will add just my top 5.  P.S.  it has been really hard to narrow it down.  I hope you learn something from these very cool slides.  Leave us a comment about your favourite tool or new learning.  Enjoy.

Our Classroom Political parties

 Over the next three weeks we are learning about the New Zealand Political system and government.  In the process, we are creating our own political parties.  This involves coming up with our key classroom values and 3 laws they think will make better classroom.  We will be holding elections at the end of week 4.

Our next step is to have a leaders debate.

Character Description - Nevaeh Lawton

For writing this week, we had to describe a character. Most people made up their characters. We had to list all the thing about our character using our 5 senses. The character I made was an avocado called Avo Man.

Avo man was walking the street, he was getting lots of stares. This is probably because he’s way better looking than everyone else. His shiny green and black skin and his soft avocado insides, this guy was slick.

He turned to all the onlookers and in his very low pitched voice, “hey, how's it going?”. A cheeky grin spread across his face. Everybody plugged their noses and fanned the air around them. Maybe they weren’t looking at him for his looks… It was the smell! The street is filled with B.O and moldy avocado. ‘Yum just what everyone wanted’. When he got home, he felt his squishy tummy rumbling, LUNCH TIME! He doesn’t eat the usual food like, rocks or soil. He ate chips. That was all. The chips he ate were a bumpy rough pattern, like his skin.

After Avo Man had eaten, he went to sit on the couch, to watch the television. That’s all he ever did. When his favourite sports team loses, he’d rage and throw stuff everywhere. Last time that happened he pushed his sleeping friend off the couch and he came back the next day with a broken collar bone. (yes carrots have collar bones) At the end of the day, Avo man feels pretty darn tired (even though he didn’t actually do anything) he goes to bed to dream about food. Good night Avo Man.

I have been learning to do Character Description writing. My writing is about Simon the cat. It is explaining what he looks like, and what he does.  I did it on Simon the Cat because he seemed cool. I never did Character Description before so it was cool to learn.

My thoughts on should social media be allowed to hold and store our personal information? - Leo

our teacher told us to share our thoughts on different subjects. My topic is: should social media be allowed to store our personal info?

These are the pros and cons on the matter.

Hi my name is Leo. I'm 11 and a year 7 at Otaki College on the Kapiti coast. My question is should social media be allowed to store and hold our personal info? The answer is No. 

Firstly, if apps can get hold of your personal information, they can learn everything about you but they are strangers, also if you say too much it can be used against you. People can get your passwords and sometimes get into your bank account. 

Secondly, some sites like facebook or instagram save all the photos you post, even the ones you delete. This makes the site untrustworthy with your personal things like your age and address.

Thirdly, on the plus side, the game can set itself up to your age level. Others use your comments or suggestions to make the game or app better.

My final opinion is that No, social media should not be allowed to store our personal info. Yes it might make the app or site better, but do they all? The true answer is no, not really. Gaming sites like roblox, save your conversations with other players and tell the big company owners what you like and send ads using that information and think you will click and go by something because you like it. That is my opinion on should social media store our info.

Dear Jacinda, my name is Fraser from Otaki Wellington. I am 12 years old and I love cars, swimming and basketball. I am writing this email to tell you that you have worked very hard.

Firstly I wanted to recognise you for being a responsible confident Leader, and for making some tough decisions. Also, if it wasn't for you we could still be in level 4.

Hello my name is Summer and I'm a year 7 at Otaki College, I definitely think you should come and visit sometime! I'm writing this because I would like to recognise the amazing things you have done for us, NewZealand.

Everybody would like to thank you for being super responsible with your choices, Being a huge step ahead. If it weren't for you this horrible virus would be spreading faster and making people extremely ill. 🤒

Another thing I would like to recognise is why you are an amazing leader for New Zealand. You are confident, stern, Work very hard, and you have a positive attitude about everything. Thank you so much for reading! Have a very nice weekend!

my character descripiton -Bijou

The chubby cat peered over the edge of the bed. His long fuzzy tail flicked on and off the duvet cover. He was looking at his owner to see if he was awake. The demanding and percistent cat for another way to wake him up. Finally, My owner was awake. Ughh, he's back asleep already. That was what Simon's morning was like.

Simon looks like a fat squishy polar bear. He has a long fuzzy tail. His eyes are as big as a frog's eye. He's got a very cute mouth. He's very cute in general. I guess you could call him a kawaii cat.

He sounds like a baby when he meows. But he has a low, dark and creepy voice when he purrs. When he's angry he'll try and bite you with a crr sound! It's very scary.

Simon loves, like loves, smelling other cat's bum's. It's his way of saying all greetings and questions like hey!, how are you? What's your name? I mean he kind of likes sniffing the outdoors but not that much.

Simon loves touching nice fluffy blankets. He loves couches as well but he rips the thread out most of the time. He loves soft things like blankets and pillows are his favourite.

He loves eating biscuits. Temptation ones are his favourite. Simon doesn't really mind what he eats. He eats anything but he usually gets sick and throws the food back up 😆😨

When Simon's owner doesn't wake up he's thinking Oh my!, Wake up, I'm so so hungry!, Ughhh! Simon really can't be bothered anymore he can't put up with this anymore.

Simon loves being playful. But when he's in a very high play mode watch out he's very dangerous. If Simon doesn't get his way he'll be the most demanding and sassy cat you would've ever seen. When his owner comes back Simon acts innocent and cute.

Finally Simon woke his owner up with a thud of a bat.

Tenakoe my name is Nevaeh, I am a year 7 at Otaki college. I am writing to you today to talk about Littreing in the ocean.

Every year, large amounts of litter enters the sea. As plastic are particularly durable,the mass of plastic debris in the world's ocean is steadliliy increasing-often with fatal consequences for count less sea creatures. Ever morning i take a stroll down the beach side to see rubbish placed everywhere on the ground... im discussed!!

End this madness!  Its horrible to hear the fact that over 1 million sea animals die a day toward plastic, rubbish and anything more is so dissapointing, including 100 millon tons of rubbish in the ocean around the world. Stop littering, save the world.

My name is Mikaera. I go to Otaki college. I am a year eight I would love it if you could come and visit the best town in Aotearoa.

I'm writing this letter because I have recognised what you have done for New Zealand. And I wondered why we were in lockdown? I only just realised what could have happened.The end result and look now we've had 1442 recover I thank you.I want to recognize your hard work and for making the hard decisions you did.

I'm writing this letter to thank you for opening up Mcdonalds,Burgerking and KFC.Its finally feeling normal again.

Describe a setting - Ned

In class we had to do a thing that we went outside a write about what is around me.  Here is my story:

Struggling to walk through the damp grass, ready to get muddy, The yellow and brown leaves sticking to your feet like glue. The clouds ready to flutter its rain to the world. The faint sound of the cars on the highway gives a car person like me joy. I can hear the other students and teachers playing in the gym. The old style buildings behind me full of hard workers. The detoxifying long field gives me hope of fitness. My thoughts in my head ready to burst out.

The old dampened trees cover me from the rain. The taunt of all the leaves on the field give my shoes a hard time to survive from the down pore the night before.grey clouds cover the view of the sky. The sound of nature helps the day of darkness. The hope of a sunny day in otaki leaves my head ever more. The hope of going to the beach soon is slowly fading away for good.

Life is cruel - Reece

In class we are working on describing our character and I chose to write about a homeless person. i tried to describe my character so that the reader would connect with him, do you think i have done that

The hungry, homeless human grovels on the dirty ground begging for cash. "The world is cruel" he repeats to himself the world is cruel.

The mysterious male has rugged ripped cargo shorts with a had-it brown top with countless holes. His isolated shoe less feet keep him colder than ever. His big bulging eyes make him look more depressed. The only features on this individual that keeps him warm is his huge hairy beard and his big bushy Afro.

"Get a life loser" or "mum, why is that man sleeping on the ground?" Those are most common for this long gone wreck. He gets abused, kicked and even spat on. "Life is cruel" he says life is cruel

Finishing our "Get NZ Writing".

It was the last day of school before lockdown and our Get NZ Writing tasks were due.  We managed to finish it in time before the Courier came.  We had to write a secret coded message for our Class in Te Atatu to work out with their cool glasses.  Here we are with our finished product.  Can you work out the code?  (We put the glasses over the camera to help you out.)

Lockdown During School Holidays Suck OR Do They.


My family and I were playing a game of monopoly until my brother said we should do an all nighter. Know it is Saturday we are all ready for staying up all night. To start the all nighter of we talked and talked then we decided to play a game of  Monopoly.Monopoly lasted way too long we were  getting sick of it by then.Since we'd marshmallows in the cupboard mum said we're going to make a campfire outside.We gathered sticks and wood from our forest and then we got newspaper from our garage dad grabbed the matches from inside.When the fire burnt down a little we open the bag of marshmallows and stuck them on our metal sticks.It sucked because some of my marshmallows fell off my stick into the fire because the metal Rod was so hot.It was getting a little cold outside so I grab my slippers in my blanket.I went on my phone and Chromebook for a bit I got so tired I fell asleep on the couch I was the first one to fall asleep I fell asleep at 11:30 my little brother fell asleep at 2:00 and my older sister 3:30. The End.
